Tops
I like to be warm. I try to be strong enough to carry an extra warm layer in my pack, just in case. I know that is not traveling light, but it is safe.
Packing Comments
- Town Shirts
- 4 cotton shirts for traveling and relaxing
- Technical Tees
- 6 running tops to be worn on hot days or as a base layer.
- Long Sleeve Light Weight Shirts
- 10 basic light mountain base layers. We like the wool shirts but you have to be careful washing and drying it. We choose capilene instead. Works great. We might add a couple of mid-weight zip tees to the duffle just in case.
- Overshirt
- 5 light stretchy shirts. They add warmth and wind protection.
- Vest
- A lightweight synthetic vest, must pack small.
- Synthetic Insulated Pullover
- A basic warm layer of synthetic fill. A good all around piece of insulation. Sort of like a heavy wool sweater. Same warmth, but less weight. We use Patagonia Puffball Pullovers.
- Down Jacket
- A very light and very warm jacket. Weighs less than a pound. We use a Western Mountaineering jacket.
- Camp Jacket
- We like to have a warm camp jackets for those cool evenings and cold mornings. We use an efficient Puff Jacket, similar to the Puffball but with a hood and a zipper. Very warm and casual.
- Wind Top
- We will probably bring a couple of wind tops. I used to always wear one over my base layer and then layered on top of it. Now I use overshirts instead. I bring them if I just want to do something different. Amy uses them more than me.
- Waterproof Rain Jacket
- An absolute waterproof jacket. If I bring it with me it’s to wear if I get wet or cold. You don’t walk in the jacket, instead you put it on and wait the storm out. My jacket is a Mountain Hardware, Amy uses an Equinox.
- Gore tex Jacket
- A light waterproof breathable jacket with a good hood, pit zips, and ventilation tricks that allow us to adjust our temperature.
Post-Trip Comments
We cut back on the quantities of most things. Orginally we were thinking of going a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of three weeks between laundry days. More realistically we saw that we were going to have to take a break every ten to fourteen days.
- Cotton Shirts
- We wore one every chance we got.
- Tech Tees
- I swapped back and forth between Long Sleeve and Tees, with little difference in performance.
