Head
A good hat provides an enormous amount of warmth, shade, and protection from the rain. I carry a balaclava in my pack which is the most versatile (yet dorkiest) head gear and wear a brimmed cap for the sun and rain. Amy uses a regular synthetic watch cap (beanie) for warmth. As far as bandanas, I sweat a lot. I can help control the sweat with a bandana as well as use it as a snot rag or ??? Amy also carries one as an all purpose cloth.
Packing Comments
- Town Cap
- A favorite just to make me feel better when my bald head is really dirty. My wife also likes a good hat to cover the dirty hair. We will keep one close in the car.
- Running Caps
- We use quick drying brimmed sports caps to hike in.
- Shade Cap
- Full brimmed tech cap to protect our necks. It seems like the neck is always in the sun.
- Watch Cap
- A synthetic fleece cap for warmth. Nothing really special about it, except the one my wife uses glows in the dark, so I can find her.
- Balaclava
- I use a Patagonia capilene in ’80’s colors. I don’t think Patagonia makes one anymore.
- Bandanas
- 16 - cotton, one for each day. It’s hard to use a sweaty rag two days in a row.
Post-Trip Comments
- Town Cap
- Wore everyday. We did not take showers regularly!
- Running Caps
- I used mine every day toward the end of the trip.
- Shade Cap
- We used them toward the beginning of the trip. Amy used a Sahara-type but did not like hers because it was too warm on sunny days.
- Watch Cap
- Amy always had it close.
- Balaclava
- I used one each day or at least had it close.
- Bandanas
- Used for everything, everyday.
