Acclimating Day
Date to Climb: June 10, 2009
Event: Mid-Mountain Hike
Pre-Acclimating Day Comments
We haven’t decided what to do on this date. It would be great to do a mountain or hike to about 11,000 feet. There is plenty of time to figure it out.
Other concerns will be food shopping. We decided not to bring much food with us and instead purchase food at the towns along the way, in hopes to satisfy our appetites and avoid wasting food.
We will add the hike of choice when we finally decide.
Post-Acclimating Day Comments
We found out from Mark that the road to the Indian Peaks was not open due to lingering snow. We opted to hike Green Mountain in the Flatirons, instead.
With an alpine start of 9:15, we began from Chautauqua Park Trailhead. This is one of our favorite hikes. It is steep enough to make you breathe if you keep a good pace. After an uneventful hike we made it to the summit in less than two hours. We saw lots of dogs who had the special green tags that allow them to run free - they are controlled by voice commands. Ha, hardly. I did not see a single dog that was under command, other than the few that were on leashes. None of the dogs seemed mean, but the owners were not controlling them.
After hiking we did laundry and finally went shopping. We went for a brief tour of all the outdoor stores. REI got the most of our money.
Back at Mark's we readied everything to leave for the mountains on Thursday. We decided to leave by 6:15 in the morning.
